| Feeding of eagles in the Store Mosse National park |
|
100402 The season is soon coming to an end. We have recorded 40 different eagles during the winter; 25 Golden Eagles and 15 White-tailed Eagles. Five of the banded Golden Eagles are Swedish birds (four from northern Sweden) and one is banded in central Finland. We have recorded five banded White-tailed Eagles; one from Finland and the rest from Sweden.
The blue spots are origin for the Golden Eagles and the red are origin for four of the White-tailed Eagles. At the moment we have three White-tailed in the area but they are hard to catch in the web-cam since they often sit in the outskirts of the station. Thank you for your interest in this winter and welcome back in the end of November. |

100323 Today we had a new guest at the staton; a Great Black-backed Gull. Previous years we have had Herring Gull and Common Gull. Normally we finish the feeding at this time but during this cold winter the consumption of meat has been lower. One reason is that the meat has been hardfrozen during longer periods and thus more diffcult for the birds to tear apart. We have a lot of meat left in the fridge so the activity will carry on for a couple of more weeks. Until the middle of april you will still have the opportunity to watch eagles at the web cam.

100226 The two White-tailed Eagles have apparantly surrendered and abandoned the station - we haven't seen them since last Sunday. But Fox and Foggy don't let us down - they are visiting regularly. A new adult Golden Eagle was documented the 21 February, the tenth adult for the winter. But the comeback of the week was a Golden Eagle in 6th plumage banded 526K in southern Sweden (those are very rare at the station). See picture below. Tip of the day: watch Fox and Foggy at YouTube in HD!

100221 We have had lots of snow during the weekend but our hope that the weather would bring new eagles to the station was not fulfilled. It has been our regular Fox who had managed to entice his female Foggy to approach the station. When Fox arrives at the table he calls frequently. Foggy replies from a distance and after a while she enters the table. Two White-tailed Eagles have been present but they have mostly been watching from a distance. One of these is the unmarked individual that first was reported on Dec 27th (see picture below).

100214 Fox continues to visit the station faithfully but otherwise we have had few visitors the last week. The weather forecast is promising snowfall and increasing wind for the coming days and that is good conditions for getting new eagles to the station. The banded White-tailed Eagle recovered 2d February has been confirmed and it is banded as a chick 1985 in Lappland, northern Sweden. It is the oldest eagle ever confirmed at the station.

100204 Two eagles have visited the station regularly the last week; the adult Golden Eagle called Fox and the massive juvenile White-tailed banded 48B0. The first juvenile Golden Eagle was reported on the 2d February and the day after an old banded White-tailed was recovered. If the bird is correctly marked it is born 1985.

100127 During the weekend a new adult Golden Eagle was reported from the station. It's an individual in at least 6th plumage, unfortunately not ringed so its origin is not known. The seven other adult Golden Eagles are all well known from earlier years. However we have not yet recorded any juvenile Golden Eagle at the station ,which reflects the bad breeding result 2009 for the species. With this rookie we now have recorded 21 Golden Eagles and 8 White-tailed Eagles this winter.

100120 At Monday nine eagles were documented at the station, of which six were Golden Eagles. Two of these were ringed 2004, now in their 6th plumage, and proved to be known from earlier years. The individual ringed 077K, from northern Finland, has visited the station every winter since 2004/05 and her plumages can be studied at the page "Compare plumages". She is a wary eagle that most often is feeding in early morning or late in the evening. The second is ringed 526K west of Store Mosse and was documented for the first time last season.

|
100114 The number of visiting eagles has been low the last week. A couple of Goshawks and a Rough-legged Buzzard have seized the oppurtunity to feed during longer periods of the days. The absence of eagles could imply that there are carcasses of e.g Roe Deer in the surroundings.
|
|
100106 The cold weather the past week has as expected resulted in new arrivals at the station. Four Golden Eagles and three White-tailed Eagles have been documented. A White-tailed Eagle is a special guest; it is banded in Finland 1997, now aged 13th years. This is the oldest banded eagle we have recorded.

091228 The monitoring during Christmas was rewarding with many eagles at the station. The best day was Sunday when 8 Golden Eagles and 1 White-tailed were feeding. The total is now 12 Golden and 2 White-tailed Eagles. The forecast for New Year is chilly weather which should bring more new guests to the station.

091217 The last week we have had visits of four Golden Eagles and one White-tailed Eagle. The White-tailed is the same juvenile as earlier and the adult Golden Eagles Fox and Foggy are almost daily guests. 5th plumage Triss is also visiting regularly. A new Golden Eagle appeared on Tuesday, an individual with a red ring on right tarsus was noted. The plumage indicates that it's in the 2d pl. (2 cal.year). Since the weather is getting colder the number of visitors will probably increase. Freezing meat results in harder work for the eagles to feed and thus longer time needed at the station.

|
091208 This individual is new for the season but known from last season. It is a bird in 5th plumage, unmarked and called Triss. Notice the worn line of lesser coverts which make this bird easy to recognise on the web cam.

091202 At 15 o'clock today a juvenile White-tailed Eagle joined the old Golden Eagle pair at the table. Usually White-tailed Eagles don't show up until end of December/beginning of January. This individual even dared to feed from the table - also unusal for White-tailed.

91130 The seasons first visit by a Golden Eagle was at the 25th November. Today a pair visited at 12 o'clock. They are most likely our well-known pair; the male Fox (in the tree) and the female Foggy, now in their 7th resp. 8th plumage. The two last mornings an adult Goshawk has been feeding.
